Water-based spinning systems

Speciality Fibres and Materials Ltd has particular expertise in water-based spinning systems and the production of fibres from carbohydrate polymers, such as alginate. A polymer solution is "spun" into a liquid that has no dissolving power for the polymer, resulting in precipitation or coagulation of the polymer in fibrous form.

Our wet spinning line comprises polymer solution make-up, controlled extrusion of filaments, stretching, washing and drying. The production line can also provide a route for the application of desirable additives to fibres, using the fibre as a carrier or delivery system.

This can be achieved for example by mixing the additive into the polymer solution or by coating the ready-made fibre surface.
